NEWS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: April 28, 2004
NR04-06

Taxi Meters Must Be Inspected by June 30

HONOLULU — The Hawaii Department of Agriculture (HDOA) is reminding all Oahu taxi drivers that they must have their taxi meters registered and inspected by the Measurement Standards Branch (MSB) before June 30, 2004.  The department will not mail out inspection notices to taxi owners.

The MSB will begin inspecting taxi meters on Oahu, beginning May 3, 2004. Inspections will be performed Monday thru Friday (except State holidays), between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. at MSB, which is located near Sand Island at 1851 Auiki Street.  Taxi owners may call MSB at 832-0690 to schedule an appointment or bring in their taxis for inspection on a first-come first-served basis during inspection hours.

Taxi meter inspection involves running the taxi through a pre-measured course to determine that the meter is working properly, helping to ensure that riders are accurately charged for their fare.
